Saronic Islands |

The Saronic Islands consist of Aegina,
Angistri and Poros; often included are also Spetses, Hydra
and Dokos. The islands are easy to reach from the mainland
(Piraeus). There is plenty of accommodation available it gets
busy during the weekends though.
Aegina is the biggest island
within the group. It has plenty of water and is therefore
rather green. Among Athenians the island is often referred to
as Pistachio Island. The majority of people coming here is
day trippers from Athens. The island is quite pretty but I’d
recommend coming here during the week. The capital is well
known among Athenians for its fine restaurants. Worth seeing
are Aphaia Temple and the ruins at Paleochora.
The island of Poros is of
volcanic origin. It is only about 500 meters off the
mainland. It has beautiful beaches and extensive forests. One
of the things to do is a visit to the ancient temple of
Poseidon. The quickest way to get there from Athens is the
“Flying Dolphin”; a fast boat from Piraeus. It takes about 1
hour. Spetses is most famous for the
pinewood on the island. Especially in the hot summer months
the shade in dense forests is a welcome relief. The villages
on the island are rather charming. It is hard to believe that
one is only about one hour away from the hectic life in
Athens. Spetses feels like proper country side which
technically it of course is.
