Linaria: All ferries arrive in this
small port town. There are a few restaurants and rooms to
rent but hardly anyone stays. The place is pretty dead. Most
tourists go straight to Skyros Town (Chora). There is a bus
that is aligned with the ferry schedule.
Skyros Town – is situated in the east of
the island. It is surprisingly pretty. It is build in typical
“Greek island style” with narrow alleys, white houses and
tiny little shops. The locals are very friendly. It is a nice
place to chill out for a few days. If you are into
hiking the south is
where you want to go. It is as desolate as it gets in Greece.
There is a downside though. If you get into trouble here you
are in trouble. There are hardly any people living in the
area so it is important to take some precautions. Bring
plenty of water and let someone know where you are going. The
mountainous terrain can be tricky. The south is probably not suitable for
beginners. It is rough, hot and dry. There are rewards
though. In the area lives the famous Skyros Pony. It is an
endangered species. These ponies are tiny. With a shoulder
height of only about 1 meter high they are most possibly the
smallest breed of horses in the world. With a little bit of
luck you will see one. There are only 140 animals left
though. Busses on Skyros: It is surprinsingly
simple. There is one bus line and it goes from the prot to
Skyros town. Busses go five times a day and whenever there is
a ferry. Getting to Skyros: There are two ferries a day from Kimi on the Euboea peninsula. There is one flight a day from Athens. The airport on Skyros is tiny though.
